On the day of Pentecost. On the day
of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.
Suddenly, a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven
and filled the whole house where they were sitting.
They saw what's deemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them
All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak
in other tongues as the spirit enabled them.
One evening in August 1987 Northwest Airlines flight 255 took off from Detroit.
This flight was headed to Santa Ana, California,
and had in the cockpit a thoroughly experienced captain and first officer.
Everything regarding the flight was anticipated to be safe and
but upon takeoff, the airplane oddly
began to roll from side to side.
It was then noticed that the plane wasn't climbing into the air sufficiently quickly.
It in fact was so low that the left wing hit a light pole
tearing off five feet of that wing and igniting a fire.
That resulted in the aircraft rolling uncontrollably
full 90 degrees to the left.
The plane then hit several more light poles and the roof of a rental car building.
Seconds later, the plane crashed on a city road and hit
several vehicles.
Of the 155 people on board that day,
all but one were killed in the crash.
21 of the victims were children, including a six month old baby.
Two other adults in cars were killed as well when the plane crashed
on the road.
To this day, this airplane crash is one of the deadliest
in all US history. So what happened?
The investigation afterwards revealed that flight two five five crashed
because the pilots on board failed to extend what's known as the flaps
and slats.
These are the parts of the back and front of the airplane wings that can be
temporarily extended to change the shape of the wings.
That changed shape allows the airplane to generate more lift
on takeoff and landing.
Without those parts extended, an airplane
can't safely climb into the air and is
at best doomed to danger,
or at worst condemned to disaster.
